[fU] woe is me... gcc 3.3.1 breaks it all!!!!

i just installed suse 9.0 on my box and the serializable_adapter<> trick 
doesn't compile. If i define a specialziation once it says i've done it 
twice. If i don't do it at all i of course get other errors.

aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!
