[Libexif-devel] Translations on Launchpad

I was surprised to discover that Canonical, the Ubuntu people, have a project
to facilitate localization of packages included in Ubuntu. One of those
packages is libexif. They have partial and full translations of libexif into
22 languages at
https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/libexif/+pots/libexif-12
compared to only 14 that we're currently shipping in libexif. Most of our
translations come from the Translation Project
<http://www.translationproject.org> which is a similar project to coordinate
translations that seems to be run entirely by volunteers.

Since the Launchpad translations are licensed under BSD-like terms, there's
no reason not to import them into the libexif source tree. I'm planning on
doing that for the set of currently-unsupported languages that have at least
10% translated entries (namely: be en_GB it ja pt sq zh_CN), and then
notifying the Translation Project that these languages are now coordinated
elsewhere.

I had some difficult to build libexif-0.6.18 and I needed only exif-0.6.18
for testing of a new translation.

Ok, I'll try to build libexif-0.6.18 also and those two error messages
surely will disappear.

I found two missing msgids in exif-0.6.18

First is exif/actions.c:224

"Adding entry..."

The second is in exif/main.c:

it should be

{"set-value", '\0', POPT_ARG_STRING, &p.set_value, 0,
N_("Value of tag"), N_("STRING")},

also, I got error messages about this line:

ed = exif_get_data_opts(l, log, 0, EXIF_DATA_TYPE_UNKNOWN)

This EXIF_DATA_TYPE_UNKNOWN was really unknown and I added the
following lines at the beginning of exif/main.c to workaround:

#ifndef EXIF_DATA_TYPE_UNKNOWN
#define EXIF_DATA_TYPE_UNKNOWN 254
#endif

Then in the exif/utils.c file I made the following workaround change:

 //exif_loader_get_buf (loader, &buf, &buf_size);
 memcpy( buf, loader, buf_size );

I got error message about a nested exif_loader_get_buf here and
replaced it with a notorious memcpy.

BTW, line "Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: \n" in the po/exif.pot file should
contain some email address.

[Libexif-devel] libexif and exif 0.6.18 released

I'm pleased to announce release 0.6.18 of libexif and exif. This
release's highlights include greatly expanded API documentation
and sample programs, improved support for Pentax, Casio and Epson
MakerNotes, increased stability in the face of corrupted JPEG files,
and proper output alignment in UTF-8 locales.  EXIF tag fixup is now
more eager in the default case, which means that more mandatory tags
are added when needed and others automatically corrected to be of the
proper data types.  New translations for da, is, it, lv, pt_BR and sr
locales are also included.

Here are some more details:

libexif-0.6.18:
  * New translations: da pt_BR sr
  * Updated translations: cs, de, en_CA, nl, pl, sk, sv, vi
  * Added some example programs
  * libexif is now thread safe when the underlying C library is thread safe
    and when each object allocated by libexif isn't used by more than one
    thread simultaneously
  * Expanded the Doxygen API documentation
  * Access to the raw EXIF data through the ExifEntry structure members is
    now officially documented
  * Fixed some Olympus/Sanyo MakerNote interpretations
  * Added support for Epson MakerNotes
  * Fixed bug #1946138 to stop ignoring CFLAGS in the sqrt configure test
  * Added remaining GPS tags from the EXIF 2.2 spec to the tag table
  * Fixed the interpretation of some tags as being optional in IFD 1
    (to match the EXIF 2.2 spec) which stops them from being erroneously
    removed from a file when EXIF_DATA_OPTION_IGNORE_UNKNOWN_TAGS is set
  * Changed exif_tag_get_support_level_in_ifd() to return a value when possible
    when the data type for the given EXIF data is unknown. This will cause
    tags to be added or deleted when tag fixup is requested even, without a
    data type being set.
  * Added support for writing Pentax and Casio type2 MakerNotes
  * Improved display of Pentax and Casio type2 MakerNotes
  * Completely fixed bug #1617997 to display APEX values correctly
  * Stopped some crashes due to read-beyond-buffer accesses in MakerNotes
  * Don't abort MakerNote parsing after the first invalid tag
  * Sped up exif_content_fix()
  * Fixed negative exposure values in Canon makernotes (bug #2797280)
  * New API entry point: exif_loader_get_buf()

exif-0.6.18:
  * New translations: is, it, lv
  * Updated translations: da, de, id, nl, pl, sk, sv, vi, zh_CN
  * Fixed alignment of tables in locales with multibyte character encoding
    (bug #2034873)
  * Allow setting --tag=0 (needed for the GPS IFD)
  * --ifd is now honoured while displaying tag contents
  * --create-exif now creates mandatory EXIF tags with default data
  * --no-fixup disables attempts to fix tags in existing files
  * --width option sets width of output lines

But maybe it works only for %s. for %i it is not needed.
