Ok, I didn't know that, please excuse my newbiness. Using libdbi for a school project, I've only tried my code on MySQL so far. I was actually confused by the functions dbi_result_get_uint, dbi_result_get_ulong, dbi_result_get_ulonglong. I was expecting that these functions return full unsigned integers, well at least for MySQL. IMO, it would be a good thing to make clear the behavior of these functions in the documentation. I think portability shouldn't be dictated by the library. That way, we can optimize for certain databases, and still keep compatibility with others. Take care. |

Hi, Frederic Gonieaux writes: > Hi, > > Most of the dbi drivers don't handle correctly the column types > unsigned int and unsigned long long. > SQL does not support unsigned integers. Unsigned integers are a MySQL extension of the standard and as such not portable. At least SQLite, PostgreSQL, and Firebird do not use unsigned integers (maybe Oracle does, I don't know). The current behaviour emulates unsigned integers in a portable way which works across all supported database engines. It is questionable whether your mysql driver patch would offer that much benefit as the extended range of unsigned integers would be limited to users of that driver. I'm open for discussions whether this is a useful feature or not. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka mar...@ca... Hi there, I've found a serious bug in dbi_result_get_string_idx(). libdbi erroneously returns a NULL string if the database contains an empty string. SQL mandates that NULL is distinct from '', therefore the current version of libdbi may cause data corruption. Affected are dbi_result_get_string_idx() and dbi_result_get_string() which calls the former. The fix is ridiculously trivial, see my last two checkins of src/dbi_result.c (the second patch only fixes a misleading comment in the first one). I think we should release 0.8.1 as soon as possible. Are there any other minor changes necessary that should be included into this release? regards Markus -- Markus Hoenicka mar...@ca... forgot to cc the list... should stop using webmail :-( Hi Christian, I believe I've found the solution, but I can't test it right now. Seems to me that the 6th parameter of the isc_dsql_prepare() function is the number of the dialect. Replacing "1" with "3" should fix the problem. I've already added support for the TIME and DATE checks to test_dbi.c, you'd just have to uncomment the relevant lines and see whether it works. I'd appreciate if you could check in any necessary changes tonight. I'd be glad if I could release 0.8.1 tonight to get this off my shoulders. regards, Markus "Christian M. Hi Markus, I'm pretty sure there is something like an isc_dpb_sql_dialect option to isc_expand_dpb() which can be used in _dbd_real_connect() I will have a look at this tonight and see if I find the solution. Hi Christian, I've spent an evening fixing the firebird driver, but now it works for me. I've adapted the test program to only use the types and ranges that firebird actually supports. I've fixed the handling of binary strings which are now returned ok. I've also fixed the handling of TIMESTAMP. The only thing I couldn't fix is that the client library seems to insist on using SQL dialect 1. No matter what I do, I can't create a table containing TIME or DATE columns (both are only supported in dialect 3). I tried issuing a SET SQL DIALECT 3 from test_dbi which doesn't change anything (the command works in isql). It would be nice to run this from within dbd_real_connect(). I have no ideas why this fails, and google won't tell me either. Any ideas? Unless you come up with an idea how to fix this, I'll release 0.8.1 tomorrow. regards, Markus Markus Hoenicka writes: > This is after updating to your latest checkins. Hi Christian,
I've installed the superserver on my Debian box, and finally I got it
to work. make test runs successfully without giving me these
permission headaches like the classic server did. I have no
explanation for this behaviour, but this should probably be mentioned
in the yet-to-be-written driver documentation or in the README.
The bad news is that the Retrieve data test produces a couple of
errors and mostly incorrect output. Partially the test program exceeds
firebird's builtin limits, so we have to adapt the test program. Other
errors, e.g. the binary string quoting, simply look broke:

My two favourite reasons to avoid changing the "Reply-To" are: - this is the primary cause of "out of office" floods. The auto-reply goes to the list, is sent back to everyone, including the originator, and causes another auto-reply... - it makes it unnecessarily hard to reply to the author instead of to the list if you *really* mean to respond to the author. The "other way" you were asking for is to hit the right button in your mail client. In Emacs/VM it is as easy as pressing "F" instead of "R" to reply to the list ("F" actually doesn't require moving your index finger off the default position when doing touch-typing. "R" requires moving your finger approx. 20mm which is way more strenuous). Any other reasonable mail client offers similar choices. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka mar...@ca... also, there is problem that in any libdbi list, if i click reply, then the "sender of the email on the mailing list(say, ash...@ya...)" appears in the "To" of the , whereas it should be the "mailing list email(lib...@li...)" in the "To". Bcoz of this many times we send reply privately to the email sender (mostly to markus) instead of sending on the libdbi mailing list and that person has to take care of forwarding it to mailing list again. i think that this may be corrected by setting "Reply-To" setting of the mailing list administration setting, which is usually there in all the mailing lists (i don't know about the sourceforge mailing list administrative options flexibilty). or any other way? bye :-) Ashish ______________________________________________________ Yahoo! for Good Donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. http://store.yahoo.com/redcross-donate3/ |

Maybe there would be a point in subscribing this mailing list to www.gmane.org, such that it could be read with an newsreader. Most newsreaders should have a feature that allows you to download a set of messages to your harddisk. What do people think? There is no public access to the list archives in mbox format (think spam control). Hi Christian, unfortunately there is no superserver port for FreeBSD. This may indeed be a part of the problem. I've also used the classic server on my Debian box. I'll try the superserver next week (Debian does have superserver packages). In any case, if the test program runs on your Linux box, I see my problems as porting problems rather than as driver problems. I agree with your cvs message that we should include the firebird driver in 0.8.1 and see what happens. regards, Markus Christian M. Stamgren writes: > I really can see what is going on here. I'm not a firebird export either. On my system the user I'm using for firebird
isn't a regular user and was created running gsec as root.

I can run the test program either with localhost or just empty doesn't mather.
I can also run the test program as any user on my system. As long as I use the
valid db user testuser as the user for libdbi.

The crazy thing about this is that my setup looks as simple as yours.
I have only used Firebird on Gentoo (and Windows in the form of Interbase many
years ago).
I really can see what is going on here. One thing that might be mentioned is
that I run the server as a superserver. I don't know exactly whats the
difference between superserver and classicserver but ....
libdbi driver directory? [/usr/local/lib/dbd]

Use CONNECT or CREATE DATABASE to specify a database
CREATE DATABASE 'localhost:/opt/firebird/test.fdb' user 'testuser' password
'testpassword';
Successfully connected!
Using database engine version 1050247 (numeric) and 1.5.2.47 (string)
Test 1: List databases:

Test 2: Create database test.fdb using default encoding:
This is a no-op with the sqlite/msql/firebird drivers.
Test 3: Select database:
Ok.
Test 4: Get encoding:
The database encoding appears to be: US-ASCII
Test 5: Create table:
Ok.
Test 6: List tables:

It is not yet clear to me whether the crash has something to do with
permissions. It could be a rather unrelated problem that is specific
to my platform or my setup. Remember that it does not crash for me on
Debian, although I may have the permissions wrong on both platforms.

No, I'm not running this as root. I use my regular user account. For
what it's worth, running test=5Fdbi as root does not help either.

Initially I've only used gsec to equip the SYSDBA account with a new
password. I ran all tests using the SYSDBA user with that new
password. To exclude any problems specific to this account, I've also
created another account:
GSEC> display=20
user name uid gid full name
-----------------------------------------------------------------------=
-------------------
SYSDBA 0 0 =20
MARKUS 1000 1000 =20
The uid and gid match my system account. I've repeated all tests using
this account with the same results. I can create, access, and change
the libdbitest database using the isql tool, but not through libdbi.
As far as I understand the permission handling of Firebird, it makes a
difference whether I use a local connection or a TCP connection. I use
something like:
localhost:/home/markus/workspace/libdbi/firebird
as the path in the iSQL CONNECT command and
database directory=3F [.] /home/markus/workspace/libdbi/firebird
database hostname=3F [(blank for local socket if possible)] localhost
in test=5Fdbi. According to the docs this runs the server using its own=
account, not the users account. In my case, there is a firebird
user. I've added this user to my group and changed the permissions of
the above directory to group write access. This way the isql call
which initially creates the database under the firebird account is
allowed to do so. This actually results in a file created by
firebird:markus.
In order to exclude permission problems, I added a chmod call right
after the isql command to change the database file to write access for
all. test=5Fdbi still segfaults when trying to access the database.

Could you elaborate a little further on how you handle permissions=3F
Which user account and which permissions do you use=3F I may still miss=
a simple detail about the permission handling of firebird. I'm not
sure whether I really grasp how the UNIX file permissions and the SQL
permissions have to be set to allow me to connect.=20
