In MODS, there is an authority attribute for stuff like genre terms. This basically says, look to controlled list x. Because such lists are community-specific, there can be no final all-encompassing list. The LoC has a genre term list that you can use as a start, though it's obviously more oriented towards books and such. http://www.loc.gov/marc/sourcecode/genre/genrelist.html You might see if there's a similar genre term list (for MARC, I guess) that cover movies.
