If this is your first time building LFS I would suggest using a dedicated computer like an older laptop. It's pretty easy to screw up and delete existing operating systems so I would discourage a dual-boot for your first try.

While building in the console with no X window system, use Alt-F1 and Alt-F2 to toggle between two ttys.
