#20 UI functions slowly

Many tasks in the UI are too slow,
i.e. adding activities
though saving/loading is okay as far as I have tested
the saving speed

seems to be faster to me with the ximian build.
Still this can always be improved.

Especially right at the beginning when I click "New" I have
to wait a whole lot.
It's too much waiting time.
