[Ldapdns-devel] Incompatibility with OpenLDAP 2.2.23?

I've been trying to get ldapdns3 working on a Debian 3.1 (Sarge) install
to no avail.  It compiles fine, but when run fails to answer any
queries.  Using ethereal to look at the network traffic, every time it
tries to bind to the LDAP server, a "ProtocolError" message is sent back
and the bind fails.  I've even tried binding anonymously with no luck.
What information can I provide to help debug this?
