I, too, ran into similar issues trying to get AXFR running and after
much bug hunting (and fixing, but sorry threw it all away in disgust
eventually) finally gave up and went to PowerDNS (www.powerdns.com)
which has an LDAP backend (in addition to SQL backends) and have been
extremely happy ever since.
