Hi guys, I dunno if you can help me here, I've gone and used a HD44780 4X20 display in my car along with this LCD Display plugin on a laptop running WinME. I have used also used the 4 wire shift register interface and everything works. My problem is at random times the display decides to pack up and display garbage, I'm beginning to think that it may be due to the fact that I'm powering it off a switchmode 5V powersupply in my car aswell on this I'm powering a 555 timer through a 240/12V transformer (in reverse) to get about 90V to power the back light of my LCD. The thing that throws me off is that in my car, the problem doesn't occur when I'm driving at night with the headlights on... I dunno, anyone have any suggestions? steer away from the switch mode supply?? Thanks.

use proper capacitors on your shift chips powe lines. Do not use long cables. Also check your 5V powersuply. Usualy car has 13.5V bortpower and with headlights on it changes. Power your 555 timer and all backlight stuff from car 12V, not 5V. Find backlight module made in factory (if you using those nice blue/green EL light panel)
