I fully agree. But lcd4linux (and the HD44780 driver) does not support driving a display with GPIO pins, because 
yesteryear we did not have them.

using kind of a converter (e.g. LCD2USB) would also be a proper solution.

I think the HD44780 driver supports i2c, too (but I'v enever used it)
