I'm quite sure that the width of your widget is too small. In this case the text widget prints a number of asterisks to let the user know that there's an overflow. But there's another way to test plugins: just use the 'interactive mode' of lcd4linux: run it with '-i' (or '-ii' to enter interactive mode before the display gets initialized), and enter any expressions at the prompt.
