Paul answered my question about i2c-over-parport, and pointed me here:

Looks like this i2c-parport is part of the standard kernel (at least my
2.6.11). Anyone out there could try this one with the current i2c code?
I don't have any i2c display up and running here....

If this works, someone should write some documentation in the wiki :-(
