This Version is quite old, and I'm quite sure it suffers from the bug
that exec'ed threads never get killed. But this has been fixed in SVN.

Is it possible for you to download and install a new version from SVN?

Killing the main thread will not help. Maybe you could check if 'killall
lcd4linux' will kill the remaining threads...
