I've seen cases where a display would refuse to work on certain parallel ports and worked just fine on others (using the same software to drive them). I never cared enough to check, but it's reasonable to assume that the parallel ports that worked hat 5V (or something close to it) for "high", and the ones where it didn't had only 3.3V.
