Could you try the following:

Change your config to continue a widget with fast updates (scrolling text, 
animated Icon, something like that)

run lcd4linux (debug mode)
unplug the device
wait for a while (maybe a minute) and see if it shuts down on its own?

Otherwise, if you got no luck with that, you can always use a hotplug/udev 
script to react on the unplug event, and kill lcd4linux from there.
