Well, that would be great.
But: implementing this into the driver is probably easy, but how do you 
think this should be controlled from lcd4linux? How to specify this in 
lcd4linux.conf?

I think I have a great Idea for this: Treat these symbols as GPO's! 
Normaly a GPO drives a LED, and there is already support for these GPO's 
  in lcd4linux. Now think of these symbols as LED's! Just fill up the 
GPU function with your code, and we're done!
