Hi I would like to get started with lcd4linux but I am having trouble finding a howto guide for users in english. There seems to be (in addition to ample pharm spam) a German lang PDG at the projects homepage, but didn't see much else. Where can I download drivers, etc? Thanks! Robert |

I did find the tarball on sourceforge but I still am not seeing any documentaion. There are a few things I love to know. The first and foremost is: Is there a Fedora binary in the works, if not, I would love to help someone make one (although I have not RPM'd tarballs before). Also, I am about to install lcd4linux on Fedora Core 4, if anyone has done so in the past and can give me some pointers, that would be terrific. Lastly, I am trying to maintain a very minimal FC4 build, thus if we could determine which packages are required for install and doc that here that would be quite good too. Thanks! Well, this depends on what display you want to use. But 'configure' should find out most of it. Thanks for the response Michael. As it turns out I think the pharm spam is gone now so you must have found it. At one point there was nothing at all in the trac pages except links I was not interested in following, offering free [insert drug here]. Thanks for cleaning that up. I got the .10 tarball and did a quick ./configure and a quick make, bu the make terminated quickly with this: [root@localhost lcd4linux-0.10.0]# make gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -D_GNU_SOURCE -Wall -W -g -O2 -c drv_generic_i2c.c In file included from drv_generic_i2c.c:76: lcd4linux_i2c.h:81: error: array type has incomplete element type make: *** [drv_generic_i2c.o] Error 1 Looks like I have some work to do ;) As it happens I just got the unit with the LCD (20x4 Crystalfontz CFA-635) and I through Fedora on it very quickly with little thought to my eventual production environment. I just wanted to see what cool things I could do with it. Alas... I will rebuild the unit in my typical gui-less build and try it again. I am still interested in working with someone on putting together a Fedora RPM for lcd4linux, so if anyone wants to collaborate on that please let me know. More shortly. I'm a debian user, so I can't be of much help here.... but there's a SuSE RPM (don't know if Fedora and SuSE RPM's are compatible) Don't know if there are some "RPM sources" available in CVS.... bye, Michael -- Michael Reinelt <re...@eu...> http://home.pages.at/reinelt GPG-Key 0xDF13BA50 ICQ #288386781 |

Hi Michael, When you say use the CVS version, what do you mean? I looked in the SVN repo in yout trac page and it seems empty, also the tarball I got was from sourceforge as I recall and you mentioned not to use that site, right? Would you be so kind as to provide a link to the best tarball to use? The last I looked, the SuSE RPM was for lcd4linux .9 and not the newer .10. Thanks! Hi, Looking through the CVS repos on sf.net, I see that there are many many files that have been updated in the last few weeks, and last few months. I am curious why you are not including all of this stuff in the subversion repo in your trac pages? I work with svn on a daily basis and it would be a simple matter for me to tarball all of the current files (for anyone's benefit not just mine) if they were all in there. I am not as adept with CVS, indeed I don't even have an CVS client handy. Any plans to put your project in subversion? And how troublesome would it be for you to tarball the current working set for me to use? Thanks! Well, I don't like the idea of tarballs, because they're out of date as soon as they are created :-) Please get yourself a CVS client and use the CVS repo. Basic CVS handling should be the same as with svn. bye, Michael -- Michael Reinelt <re...@eu...> http://home.pages.at/reinelt GPG-Key 0xDF13BA50 ICQ #288386781 |

Understood on the no time to migrate thing. It is difficult and time consuming to migrate repos I know. I tried using the command line cvs client but kept running into password prompts. sf.net offers anon access but I couldn't quite work that out so... For the sake of this list and future googlers here is what I did: rsync -av rsync://lcd4linux.cvs.sourceforge.net/cvsroot/lcd4linux/* . This worked out much better for me than CVS, and I got all of the files in the repo without complaint, except... All files were downloaded with ',v' appended to the filenames! So here is the one- liner I used to deal with that: perl -e 'foreach $old (glob "*,v"){$new = $old, $new =~ s/,v $//;rename $old, $new;}' Getting it to configure is a different story. I am still working on that. Right now I am getting errors indicating my 'missing script is either too old or missing'. Any ideas what that means? Hi Robert, > I tried using the command line > cvs client but kept running into password prompts. sf.net offers anon > access but I couldn't quite work that out so... just press <Enter> on the password prompt. Okay, on your advice I abandoned the rsync approach and just sorted out the cvs command. Here it is: cvs -z3 -d:pserver:ano...@lc...:/cvsroot/ lcd4linux co -P lcd4linx I was not prompted for the password. Right, because the 'co' command will never ask for a passwort, but the 'login' command will. The documentation on the wiki says: LCD4Linux's CVS repository can be checked out through anonymous (pserver) CVS with the following instruction set: cvs -d:pserver:ano...@lc...:/cvsroot/lcd4linux login cvs -z9 -d:pserver:ano...@lc...:/cvsroot/lcd4linux co lcd4linux When prompted for a password for anonymous, simply press the Enter key. So you have to issue the 'login' command first. HTH, Michael -- Michael Reinelt <re...@eu...> http://home.pages.at/reinelt GPG-Key 0xDF13BA50 ICQ #288386781 |
