You are right, the PPP plugin is far from optimal regarding CPU usage. I
don't remember exactly, but I think the system call is quite cpu-intensive.
But the PPP plugin should be considered obsolete. Use the netdev-plugin
instead, and specify 'ppp' as a device.
Example: netdev('ppp0', 'Rx_bytes', 500)
This plugin parses /proc/net/dev, and is quite fast!
