this is probably not the best place to ask this, but what is the best linux distro to use for the Averatec 5400? I need the 2.6 kernel and wifi to work. I have tried mepis 3.3 final and but have to use a safe mode to boot to the cd. once installed I can use a 2.6 kernel but have it freezes once in a while and I have to hard boot. Ndiswrapper works in mepis for me. Knoppix installs completely but won't let me use ndiswrapper. Slackware uses a 2.4 kernel and I do not know how to download the 2.6 and I do not want to have to compile a kernel from source. suggestions please. thanks Walt |

Slackware actually includes a 2.6 kernel on the second CD. I think it's preconfigured to be pretty generic, but you'll probably still have to make&&cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot&& make modules_install. And update lilo. Or grub, if you've installed that. While I'm e-mailing this... is this how other people make / install their kernels? Am I doing anything wrong? It works perfectly for me, but.... meh, I've just never checked whether that's the proper way. I love my Slackware, but I don't like just advocating it blindly. I would tell you to go ahead and seek another distro, but if you hang around here, Slackware looks poised to be the most supported distro. If you'd like to help, we'd love to have someone with a 5xxx model around to help make our kernel compatible with that hardware. the proper way under 2.6 is make && make modules_install && make install, unfortuntely, make install doesn't work as expected under slackware. well, when I say proper way take it with a grain of salt, might want to say preferred way, or something. anyway, if it works, that's all that matters. I have no idea what hardware is on the 5xxx series Averatec. Please enlighten us. I just lurk mostly, learning more and more about this machine. I now have a 2.6 kernel on it and running slack. sound hasn't been found and I will work on that and wifi. I am use to Debian based distros. How do you upgrade slack to keep it current. I know I should be googling to find these answers, but I am tired and just want to know LOL Walt |

Tired and just want to know? That means the answer's probably going to hit you in about 15 minutes! Many people, myself included, often make breakthroughs when it's way past bedtime, or when it's the middle of the day and you *just* *want* to get *off* the *computer*, but some stupid problem's nagging you. To keep current on Slack, it's usually enough to just install the latest stable version. If you have a carnal lust for the bleeding edge, I'm sure there are ways to automatically track -current. I've never been interested in being THAT up to date, though, so I'll leave that answer to someone else. About sound: this is a problem on the 3150P as well. Actually, I think that's the way it is in Slackware in general (you have to run alsaconf or something like that and set up volumes), but the 3150P's AC97 requires that the kernel module for that device be inserted as a module with certain parameters. Mine isn't working right now, as I VERY rarely, if ever, use sound, but once you've got alsa set up with volumes above zero, you just need to add a line to rc.modules (or like I do, rc.local) inserting the module with the proper params. Ah, ya twisted my arm. This might not be something you need, but I'll post anyway, since it's something every slackware / 3150P user needs to do: modprobe snd-via82xx index=3D0 dxs-support=3D2 We should probably include this little fix in whatever packages we're looking to make.
