LAME is an educational tool to be used for learning about MP3 encoding. The goal of the LAME project is to improve the psycho acoustics, quality and speed of MP3 encoding.
After roughtly two years of development, the LAME project has released a new version (3.98.2) of the best-known Open Source MP3 encoder.
All users are encouraged to use it, see new improvements regarding the previous releases and send feedback for the project.
After more than one year of developement, here is the release of the new beta version.
Overall it features improved built-in presets and is a little faster.
An updated DirectShow interface is also available.
The 3.93.1 release is a maintenance release over 3.93.
This one is mainly fixing some quality problems with the presets.
I would advise anyone using the presets to use this release.
Happy encoding...
The open source MP3 encoder "LAME" is now available at version 3.93. This is the last release of the stable codebase (except a major bug crept in).
The next release will contain major code changes which are supposed to deliver better quality and increased speed. We will offer a first beta release of the new code base for testing soon.
If you don't want to participate in the development of LAME (by doing listenig tests with the upcomming beta versions), you should grab the actual stable release and be happy with it for a while as it contains some fixes which affect quality, is a little bit faster and should be able to compile out of the box on more systems.... read more
Upgrade if you've been having trouble with LAME when using gcc 2.96*, or if you are interested in the ACM codec.

This is a bugfix release (affects quality of --alt-preset).
We wish you a happy new year!
