#341 Distorted MP3 files

When exporting selections as MP3's from Audacity the resulting file is distorted as if there has been corruption of the encoder.

I am usually able to overcome it by deleting the contents of the lame folder and dropping lame back in from the rar archive however yesterday after doing this the distorting in the exported files continued.

I am running (unfortunately, I know) Vista build 6001 and Audacity version 1.2.6. and Lame version 3.98.2.

If files are exported as wavs they are perfect so I am getting around the problem by exporting wavs and then using Audiocatalyst and the Xing encoder to make the MP3's.

What could be causing this problem?
