Now that I've finally managed to compile Kwave, installation fails. :]
Or actually, "make install" runs without errors, but when I run "kwave", =
finds no plugins and shows a tool bar but no menu.
Where should the plugins get installed?

Look in plugins/common/Makefile.am, the relevant parts are:
line 23: PLUGINDIR=$(DESTDIR)$(kde_datadir)/$(PACKAGE)/plugins
line 140: $(INSTALL) -m 755 $(MODNAME) $(PLUGINDIR)
Those lines also appear in the Makefile, maybe there's something wrong
there, look at the $kde_datadir variable at the top of the "Makefile".
On my system plugins get installed into
"/opt/kde3/share/apps/kwave/plugins", so for your system it might be
something like "/usr/share/apps/kwave/plugins".
You can easily verify what and where all things get installed (even as
non-root user) by installing somewhere in /tmp. Just type:
make install DESTDIR=/tmp/kwave-test
then look at the result:
cd /tmp/kwave-test ; find . ; cd -
and don't forget to clean up for the next pass :-)
rm -Rf /tmp/kwave-test
