process:
select mp3 tracks that make up a cd(in the order they
are on the cd) hit the "CD lookup" button, have it find
the cd's that match, pop up a window displaying the
options, allow the user to select the one they want,
tag the mp3.

I like this idea. The only problem that I see with it is that the
filenames of the tracks would have to match somehow with the
CD information. What about something like Musicmatch has
    with their super tagging feature?

perhaps something better would be a maual search (or
alongside hte automatic freedb lookup)... something you could
type in for album/artist, adn then it would connect to freedb
and give you choices. for an example (dare i say) look at
windows media player when you are "getting names" for a cd.
it either finds it automatically, or you can do a manual search.
i dunno, i think this is a fantastic idea:)

freedb has a math formula you can use to calculate a number
for a cd, this is how freedb and cddb store the cd
information. If you calculate this info from the mp3 files
then you can search for the cd they make up.

The formula takes the track lengths in order and does some
math, so if the mp3's were properly made then you should get
a match with the original cd(granted, sometimes more than
one cd has the same id number from this formula, but the
    number is limited).

You could of course do both methods (as seperate functions
please!) I know I like to use the formula method to make
sure the mp3s are of the correct length and in order.

well yeah that's how they get it, but it won't always be the
same -- i.e. on some CDs they use pregaps instead of
silences between tracks. they are ripped as silence (iirc) --
so yeah you should porbably use the two functions.
