While you may have found your answer to this issue, I will respond. If your system is RHEL or CentOS, you may have a conflicting sysstat installed. If so, the non-working sysstat package is located in /usr/local/bin. Instead of calling 'sar', you should use the full path to /usr/bin/sar so you are using the functional version.
