Change bitrate "on the fly"

Is there any chance that, using LAME or some similair app,
MP3's and other files that are high quality can be recoded to
low bitrates to save memory use? What I like about the
Windows version is the option to re-encode MP3's from
128kbit or higher to 64kbit to fit more on my Rio's meager
64MB.

Actually I was already planning on doing this using file
type conversion, i.e. converting an mp3 to an mp3 of lower
bitrate. I'm currently working on getting the basic features
working correctly so don't expect to see it for a while.
