How to change the tables or lists of contents and the entries in them

With LaTeX, a general distinction must be made between different types of directory lists:

  • lists which list contents from the document,
  • lists of external references,
  • indexes and glossaries.

The first type of lists includes, of course, the table of contents. But also lists of floating environment like the list of figures and the list of tables are part of this category. In KOMA-Script, the package tocbasic is mainly responsible for such lists. It offers various possibilities of influence, which will be explained on the following pages.

The second type of lists includes the bibliography in the first place, but also all other lists that are created with the help of biblatex or the classical way via BibTeX or a thebibliography environment. These are not covered in the following "How to" pages.

The third type includes all kinds of sorted lists that are created with the help of makeindex, xindy, xindex and similar applications. These are also not the subject of the following "How to" pages.

Hybrid forms of the last two categories, such as keyword directories using bib2gls, will not be discussed here either.
