[Knokiisync-users] Status of the "late" KnokiiSync 0.3.2

Hi everyone,

I've been working lately on version 0.3.2. In fact, there have been _so_ 
many changes, that the version really must go to 0.4.0. Here is what has 
currently been done:

   o The phone can hold up to 4 URLs per contact. The KAB can only
    hold one. Worked around this limitation using insertCustom(). The
    same goes for the notes.

    o Added the Addressee view dialog. Using it, you can see the details
    of a contact, in a single dialog. You can access it by double-clicking
    the wanted contact.

    o Implemented caller group awareness and name customisation.

    o Added a right-click menu with options:
      * Transfer to KAB
      * Update in phone
      * Show contact details

    o Reverted from using an .rc file to store the overriden phone entries
      to using a KABC::AddressBook (vcf list) file.

    o Configuration changes no longer require a program restart.

    o Added customisable name-surname seperator string.

    o KnokiiSync now discriminates between 1,2,3,3+ word names. You can
      configure how it recognises these names seperately.

    o Added a "Name configuration" dialog, which appears for each name
      class (1,2,3,3+ words) you configured KnokiiSync to ask.

    o You can now delete the overriden data of a contact by clicking the
        "Clear override data" button in the Addressee view window.

This means that the "syncing" version will be 0.5.0 (nice round number 
:-)), and everything after 0.4.0 will only contain bugfixes, unless a new 
feature that is vital for syncing is required. 0.4.0 will also contain 
many more features, which I'm currently working on, and these will be 
listed later on. Have a good day.

Good then, here's the solution. You can define the seperator, which by default 
is a single space. So, if you have "John Andrew Smith", it will recognise 
that the name has three parts. Then, an "ask" dialog will be built with three 
name widgets, so you can define which part is what, you can't however have 
more than 1 name, 1 surname and 1 additional name defined. 

This will be implemented along with many other goodies in 0.3.2, which I hope 
to be the last for the 0.3.x series, unless a urgent bugfix is required (I 
hope not).

Well, I think that's not the problem. If you assume that separator is
<SPACE> and you have the entry "Guillaume du Manoir", then it will be
parsed into 3 tokens: "Guillaume", "du" and "Manoir". Then in the dialog
you will choose:
Name: Guillaume
Surname: du
Surname: Manoir

But that's just for parsing! As the result in the KAB you'll get:
Name: Guillaume
Surname: du Manoir

As long as KAB or the phone does not support multiple names and surnames
that's OK.

For now I'd like to see the following things:
 - to be able to define pattern formats for different part numbers
 - to be able to set 'Ask' and each time manuallych choose the format
 - easily change the format in the read entry (using the same dialog as
with 'Ask')

But that's not a problem. You just have to decide what is the name, what
is the surname and what is the nickname *before* putting it into
KABC:Addressee object.

But the separator says you nothing unfortunately. You can have either 2
names or 2 surnames.

What I'd like to see is more flexibility. Imagine I have such entries:
John Andrew Doe
John Doe Smith

And please allow to fire up the dialogs to change the format (these from
the screenshots) from the popup menu under right click for the each name
to be able to easily change the format before import.

I am not sure to understand :

My firstname is "Guillaume". My last name is "du Manoir". There is no additional
name. So if SEPARATOR is a double space <SPACE><SPACE>, if I have  :
Guillaume<SPACE><SPACE>du<SPACE>Manoir

What would happen ? Would it see two our three parts ? I assume two ?

have to be inserted into one such object. You have to remember that you are 
allowed up to three fields for the full name in this class, which are:

1) Given name ("John")
2) Family name ("Smith")
3) Additional name ("Andrew")

Also, if we decide to use a "custom" dialog, there will have to be big code 
changes, and that is certainly going to push back version 0.4.0, maybe up to 
one month, until I can properly implement these features. So, the way I see 
it, based on your proposal:

I'm afraid it will give not much. Think of "John Andrew Smith". What I
would suggest is rather allowing to set some thing like:

thought of a very simple idea: Why not make the seperator of the name and the 
surname customisable? So, if you have a three-word name, like "John T. 
Smith", you can specify a two space seperator '  ' between "John" and "T. 
Smith", so you end up with a pretty customisable format. I need everyone's 
opinion on this, so I can stick it in 0.3.2, which should be ready before the 
start of the weekend.

Well, the address format is customisable, bearing in mind of course that it 
has to be inserted to a KABC::Address object at some point. The name is 
somewhat trickier, but as always, I'm open to suggestion and new ideas :-)

Nice idea. So we have 2 options here:
1) KAB->phone: Don't synchronize if there contact has no phone numbers.
2) Phone->KAB: Don't synchronize if the contact has no emails.

Since I really want to iron out any problems/wishes before I start with 0.4.0, 
these, along with Guillaume's requests/bug reports will be fixed in 0.3.2.

So this is a really good time for everyone to submit any wishes/bug 
reports/etc, since development in 0.4.0 will be based mainly on _real_ 
syncing.

without an email. And yes, you're right: my phone AB does not need entries

"subentries". Of course, their "subentries" are accounted for when 
transfering entries, so there shouldn't be any problems.

Normally, you should be asked (there is a dialog asking if you want this as a 
name, a surname, or to ignore this entry), but if it doesn't I'll look it up.

Maybe you upgraded KDE or changed something in between? I haven't altered the 
KAB code between 0.3.0 and 0.3.1.

Not sure exactly myself - I do remember having problems running koffice apps 
(crashes, random errors, etc). Then this guy tells me to run kbuildsyscoca, 
and woosh - everything's fine.

Please tell me how the entry appears in your phone, and then copy/paste the 
relevant section of .knokiisyncrc in the same mail.

What knokiisync does, is that for each entry that is _not_ in the correct 
format, it stores an entry like this:

[Entry_YYY_XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX]
InPhone="John T. Smith"
Name="John"
Surname="T. Smith"

Where YYY is the position in the phone's memory, and XXX... is the phone's 
IMEI. Name and Surname are set by the user when he double clicks the 
appropriate columns. This is so far the only "suitable solution" I could come 
up with.

It kinda sounds like a "Master Override". Not bad actually :-)
I'll make a note on that, and if it doesn't create more problems than it 
solves (code-wise), then it's propably in.

I configured knokiisync to read kab's addressbook when it's launching...
I put false in the config file, and now it's not crashing just by starting up
(!)

I tried again to modify one entry (in 0.3.1), to set the first name and last 
name right in the right column. Then I quit, and start knokiisync again. 
The entry has still the full name in one column :(

I don't know what I'm doing wrong...

Even if this way of doing it is working (not for me for now), it means that
knokiisync is storing in its config file for each entry how to sort out the
first name and last name from the full name.
It's seems a little redundant to me, isn't it ?

So each time I enter a new entry in my phone, I would have to retype it
correctly in knokiisync for kaddressbook to get it ? (In the case it's a
multi-word name of course)

I like the way to put a coma (or a double space ?) between the firstname and the
lastname, so that I only have to enter the info once (thus knokiisync has an 
easy way to separate the first name from the last name : just a split on the 
comma (or double space)...)

What is your point of view ?

True - it does seem to crash when reading your KAB. I can't reproduce it

Try to run kbuildsycoca before running knokiisync - maybe that will help.

Hi everyone,

this is to announce the release of KnokiiSync V. 0.3.1 This is a major 
bugfix release, so everyone is prompted to upgrade.
Changes:

    o Fixed a bug with three word names (eg. "John T. Smith")
    not being overriden properly.

    o Fixed a buglet in the configuration dialog (index out of range
    for the memory type combo box).

    o Fixed a crash that happened when you tried to read from an empty
    memory type (eg from an empty SIM card)

    o Fixed an issue with the progress dialogs not refreshing properly
    (ie. the window appeared as if it was frozen)

    o Fixed a bug where the status of the telephone was not properly
    shown in the status bar.

    o The default action of quiting when KnokiiSync could not connect to
    the phone has been reverted to just displaying an error message.

    o Fixed a bug where the memory type used was being passed as an i18n
    string, where a default of "Phone", "SIM" or "Phone + SIM" was
    expected.

    o Changed the progress dialogs from modal type, to non-modal.

    o Added Addressee view dialog (Read only for now)

It's a known bug, fixed in CVS about a week ago. I'm uploading 0.3.1 
(which includes the fix to this problem) to Sourceforge as we speak. The 
announcement will made later in the day. Check with the newer version, 
and please tell me if it's OK.

Well, for the entries which are causing problem, I get this message :

The phone entry "<NAME>" does not match with the configured name format!
Please either fix this in the phone or manually set the Surname and Name by
double clicking the mentioned entry.
----

And then they appear with the full name in the family name column.

If I edit the entry in knokiisync, to put the family name and the given name in
the right columns, and then quit knokiisync. The next time I start knokiisync I
get the same error message.

With the patch I included in my last mail, it's working...
