[Kmatplot-general] kde 2.2.2 icons not viewed

i am getting just the question sign icon instead of almost all icons in
the program. i am using redhat 7.2 us.
i also tried to compile kmatplot from sources, but configure always stops
on 'kde headers not found'.
could you help me, please?
