I prefer kmatplot ;-) The display is better. In addition, I'm always afraid of "free for non-commercial" terms, this often means "non free when we will be satisfied of our product". Think GPL! Hi, to whom it may concern: in another mailing list that I'm reading there was an announcement yesterday for a new Qt-based scientific modeling and plotting library. The URL is http://www.techxhome.com/products/qscimpl/index.html It seems to be free for non-commercial use. Felix |

Hi, After building kmatplot 0.3.1 on a Debian Linux system I ran the software and most functions work very well. I can add contour lines to a surface function but I am unable to do the the same to a contour plot of an actual data set. Is this expected behavior? Hi, My mail server was unmasked as an open-relay so I was unable to post to the mailling list and you server rejected my mail too, because my hostname is localhost@localdomain. No, unfortunately all titles/labels are a "pure" text. Now I rewrote KMatplot to use Qt 3.0, which has RichText editor built-in and I'm currently implementing a rich text labels. > 2) Can there any calculations be done inside kmatplot, e.g. I have > one column with time values and want to calculate a new column > with, say, sin(time) ? You can rename sheet to, for example, 'sheet' and choose Fill selected range/Formula from a popup menu. Now you can use variable 'sheet' in your formula. For example - this formula will calculate sinus of column 0 : sin(sheet(:,0)) Unfortunately you will have to repeat this operation every time you want a formula to be recalculated. On the other hand you can set "Formula matrix" with the above expression as y-data of your plot, and click Apply button every time recalculation is needed. Of course it would be better to insert formulas directly into sheet cells, but it is extremely hard to say which particular cells the formula depends on ( which is needed for an auto-update feature ) . For example which cells are used to calculate formula like this ? sheet1(sheet2(0:2:sheet3(3,4),:),[3 2 8]) > 3) May be you can put a small plan for future releases on > sourceforge, which can be discussed in the mailing list. I have never been able to follow any plans so I'm afraid that people would get frustrated ... Of course, I'm always waiting for suggestions and new ideas,so if you have ones you can post them on the mailling list ( if it works for you ) but I learnt not to give any promises or to make some long-term plans... > 4) Plans for a fitting module ? KMatplot has a quite powerful formula framework so all algorihtms like triangulation, gridding, FFT, statistics etc... should be implemented as functions, possibly in separated modules. But before that I have to implement loading of external modules and improve a grammar a bit. Hallo Kamil and all the others, I recently installed kmatplot-0.3.1, and I really like it. SuSe is now distributing binaries for Suse7.3 on their homepage ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_7.3/applicati ons/kmatplot-0.3.1-6.rpm Of course, version number and Suse version number may change. Very nice work, I like to encourage you to carry on. Of course there are some things which still do not run as smoothly as possible. However I'm already trying to use kmatplot for 'production'. And of course I have some small feature request/questions (?) (in order of my personal importance): 0)) Any plans for a little bit more elaborated docu/tutorial ? Would be really important that others can test and use Kmatplot ! Now my questions: 1) Is it possible to use greek letters, symbols (like e.g. symbol.ttf font) together with other fonts in one row of text (legend, axis text etc.). One quite often wants to print something like 'cross section sigma' where sigma is the greek letter. In addtion, the same is true for sub- or suerscripts. With that feature kmatplot can already nicely be used to produce 'ready to publish pictures'. 2) Can there any calculations be done inside kmatplot, e.g. I have one column with time values and want to calculate a new column with, say, sin(time) ? 3) May be you can put a small plan for future releases on sourceforge, which can be discussed in the mailing list. 4) Plans for a fitting module ? In connection with that, there is a very nice framework for datay acquisition/analysis with astonishing featues called ROOT (http://root.cern.ch). however for a lot of it is much "oversized". It is also open source (C++), and may be some code may be used from that. E.g. it has a well proved fitting module, (function minimizer) MINUIT, which now exsists for I think about 30 years I'm sorry, requests and no end, but your program seems to be the first free linux data analysis and plot programm, ready to use for non programmers. Keep on going !!! I'll test it a little bit more now.... KWord now only accepts ( you don't believe ) Windows Metafile Format pictures, and I didn't fount ANY library, which would allow to export to WMF on Linux. When I asked if they are going to implement other formats I got answer that probably few people would benefit from it and they are working on other features. They are not distributing kofficeparts with the core KDE library too, and there were problems with the speed of redrawing graph objects, so it is going slowly as you see. Kamil |

Hello Kamil, Finally my debian package works well. In fact, I solved my libpng problem but putting export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libpng.so.2 before the execution of kmatplot. I think that this is not necessary for people which don't have the last version of libpng, that is the 1.0.x instead of the 1.2.x. All seems to work. The demos is a good adding for the first contacts with kmatplot. Here are the important links: ftp://fyma.fyma.ucl.ac.be/pub/ljacques/Linux/projects/kmatplot/kmatplot_0.3.1-1_i386.deb ftp://fyma.fyma.ucl.ac.be/pub/ljacques/Linux/projects/kmatplot/kmatplot_0.3.1-1_i386.changes ftp://fyma.fyma.ucl.ac.be/pub/ljacques/Linux/projects/kmatplot/kmatplot_0.3.1-1.dsc Hoping it will work for all debianizers! I use libpng only indirectly using Qt objects. What version of png-devel have you installed ? If it really includes headers from the old version it means that they are installed, but only newest headers should be on the disk. You can try to upgrade headers ( or to remove the old version if both are installed ). Kamil |

It seems to work with your hint. Memory was not so much consumed in the compilation and my computer still available during it. However, I have now a problem with the libpng version. It doesn't stop the compilation but at the execution, kmatplot complains that it was compiled with png.h from libpng 1.0.x but actually linked to png.c from libpng 1.2.x (through dynamic sharing of library, I can give you tonight the result of ldd on kmatplot) How can I modify the code of kmatplot to force it to use the source of libpng 1.2.x ? It is quite important because now on debian, even if this problem of libpng version is recurrent, all kde apps are linked to the last version of libpng. Thank you again for your help, Laurent. |

Hello Kamil, I'm trying to compile the debian package of kmatplot 0.3.1 but I have a problem (another one ;-). All is recognized through the configure process (opengl, python, scilab, octave) but when I compile the sources, It takes a huge quantity of memory. So much than my Linux system has no enough resource to run X and even to switch to console. So, I have to reboot each time! It seems that the hardest step is in the compilation of files with xml in their name (xmlparser or smthing like that). Do you have a tip to avoid this phenomena ? A special gcc or g++ flags ? Thanks, Laurent. P.S. My computer is a PII 400MHz with 128Mb of ram. |

Now you can try printing to a file, choosing File/Printer Setup/Print to file. PS. Are you using kmatplot 0.3-1 or ( recommended ) kmatplot 0.3.1-1 ? |
