Hi Last week we have released Kiwix for Android 2.5. This is a maintenance release, so no new feature, but we have fixed almost 50 bugs around the library and the download manager. As a result, the software is a lot more stable. You can install the last version from the Google Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kiwix.kiwixmobile Or download the APK: https://download.kiwix.org/release/kiwix-android/2.5.1/ This is only the beginning of a strong effort the Kiwix project (with the help of the Wikimedia Foundation) is putting on our Android ZIM reader. Kiwix for Android 3.0 is next on the schedule and is planned for this summer. Stay tuned! Hi Kiwix-Desktop is our windowed ZIM reader for Windows/MacOS/Linux. For years, it has been our traditional and most famous solution... but it has reached its end-of-life. With the help of the WMF we have been working since months to provide a replacement: Kiwix Desktop 2.0. End of last year we have proposed a first replacement for MacOS: http://macos.kiwix.org/. Today we want to introduce Kiwix Desktop 2.0 for Windows & Linux with the release of its beta5 version. Kiwix Desktop 2.0 main features are: * Windows & Linux * Support new ZIM files with embedded fulltext index * Fulltext search * Suggestion system based on titles * Library with both local & remote content * Ability to search/download/delete ZIM files * Zoom * Fullscreen * Reader list * Tabs * Search in page * ... You can download it: * Windows x86 64 bits: https://download.kiwix.org/release/kiwix-desktop/kiwix-desktop_windows_x64.zip * Linux x86 64 bits: https://download.kiwix.org/release/kiwix-desktop/kiwix-desktop_x86_64.appimage or https://download.kiwix.org/release/kiwix-desktop/org.kiwix.desktop.flatpak. Also available on Flathub https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.kiwix.desktop The RC1 will be published in around 10 days and we plan to release the official 2.0.0 during July. Please give it a try and share your feedbacks at https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix-desktop/issues. Developers, the whole open source project is handled at https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix-desktop. If you have a look in detail you will see that there is still quite a bit of work to do. We really seek for C++ volunteers to help us improving Kiwix Desktop 2.0. One or two motivated guys would be so welcome to help our professional main developer. Hello all, I came along with the Kiwix project and tried running it in a Raspberry Pi Zero W. I could not run the installer in a Fedora 30 or Win10 machine, but eventually got it working in a Ubuntu 19.04 and successfully finished the setup of a new sdcard. Although when booting I receive the attached kernel panic. Could someone guide me how I could fix it? I am willing to help with the config/upgrade of a new image for raspberry, based on recent rasbpian images (if this is useful). A regular raspbian install + kiwix-server should be enough? (+ open wifi, maybe dns redirection?) I saw a lot of config being done during the hotspot setup, but could not understand them properly. Thank you, Mario |

Hi Kiwix has been working since more than 5 years to make Wikipedia and other works easily available through an offline jailed WiFi Hotspot. The solution has been named over years "Kiwix Plug" or "Pibox installer 1.0" and now "Kiwix Hotspot". If the name has changed many times, the efforts have always been pointed to the same direction: make it always easier and quicker to create your offline library WiFi Hotspot. With Kiwix Hotspot 2.0, we have probably the easiest solution to get the job done. With a PC, a good connection to internet, you will need no effort to build your own customized offline library. Whatever your operating system (Windows/MacOS/Linux) is, even if you have no technical skills, you can in a few clicks create a ready-to-use micro SD card for your Raspberry-Pi. Features: * Works on Windows/MacOS/Linux * Writes SD card image to the hard-disk or directly to the SD card * Command line & windowed versions * Full CSS customisable Web home page * Localisable in a few languages * Full Kiwix ZIM catalog available * Online File browser for custom additional files * Wikifundi * KA Lite Just download and run the software: * Windows: https://download.kiwix.org/release/kiwix-hotspot/v2.0.3/kiwix-hotspot-win64.exe * MacOS: https://download.kiwix.org/release/kiwix-hotspot/v2.0.3/kiwix-hotspot-macos.dmg * GNU/Linux: https://download.kiwix.org/release/kiwix-hotspot/v2.0.3/kiwix-hotspot-linux.tar.gz ... The rest is quite easy. In the worse case, we have created a documentation in English & French which is available here: https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix-hotspot/tree/master/docs We really hope this will allow new non-tech people to create offline library by themselves. Work on version 3.0 has already started and should be achieved later this year. This new version will bring a new fancy UI, customisable at anytime easily and of course with more education softwares and works. Hi Yesterday, in our MWoffliner 1.8.0 release announcement email, I have written about the first libzim official binding of the openZIM project: node-libzim. What I don't have written is that this has been made possible by the previous release of libzim 4.0.5 a few days ago. We release usually new versions of the libzim time to time. Releases which - most of the time - contain minor changes (at least from the user perspective) and mostly used within our openZIM & Kiwix projects. Therefore, we don't make a lot of publicity about them. But, this maintenance release is a bit different. For the first time, we have released binaries and headers for GNU/Linux x86 64 bits. You can find them here: https://download.openzim.org/release/libzim/. It is now easy to build a binding without any hard compilation work, that's what we have done for node-libzim. This is only a first step, we need to go further to offer better opportunities to developers of scrapers. We want in particular to: * Provide libzim binaries for MacOS (and why not for Windows) * Provide a libzim binding in Python (we have a lot of scrapers in Python). Volunteers are really welcome to help make this possible. This would be extremely helpful to provide more & better scrapers. Thanks very much. This is excellent progress. Now Come Thou Long Expected 1.9 with categories. Can the js binding for nodejs read zim metadata without reading the entire > file, i.e. is there a metadata api? |

Hi We have published a new version of MWoffliner: the MediaWiki scraper. Version 1.8.0 is - like always - available here: https://www.npmjs.com/package/mwoffliner This new release contains big improvements in term of performance. MWoffliner 1.8 does not require anymore zimwriterfs binary and can write directly on-the-fly offline ZIM files. This means far less mass storage usage and a number of IO accesses divided by around 5. Here is the detailed changelog: 1.8.0: * UPDATE: Write ZIM files directly (Using Libzim) #184 * UPDATE: Removed 'tmp' files and directory #448 #575 * UPDATE: Removed --deflateTmpHTML and --tmpDirectory arguments #575 #576 * UPDATE: Implemented better request backoff #496 * UPDATE: Change file names/paths #278 * UPDATE: Removed --writeHtmlRedirects argument #506 * UPDATE: Removed --localMCS option (automatically detect) #490 * UPDATE: Updated documentation #423 * FIX: Other stability, logging and error handling fixes All of this has been made possible because a new software piece in openZIM portfolio: node-libzim. node-libzim is a JavaScript/NodeJS binding of our ZIM format reference library: libzim. It allows quickly to read/write ZIM files directly in JavaScript. The code is available in our code forge at https://github.com/openzim/node-libzim and of course available at npmjs.org: https://www.npmjs.com/package/@openzim/libzim. This is the third milestone of a few we have planned with the support of the WMF. Next one on the list is 1.9 and is planned for end of April. With 1.9 we want to implement the full support of MediaWiki categories. Hi We just have released version 2.5.0 of Kiwix JS browser extensions for Firefox & Chrome. You can find the new browser extensions: * Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kiwix/donaljnlmapmngakoipdmehbfcioahhk * Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/kiwix-offline/ Kiwix JS 2.5.0 Changelog: * Support for javascript content inside the ZIM file, only in ServiceWorker mode. Handle noscript tags in jQuery mode, and display a warning when some unhandled javascript is detected * Preliminary support of video/audio content (including subtitles) : these content types are now supported. You can read them for example in TED/TEDx, dirtybiology, oer4schools etc. BUT the main page of these ZIM files needs javascript to work properly, which is only enabled in ServiceWorker mode. In jQuery mode, the user needs to reach the pages through a search * Some technical fixes : footnotes in wikimedia ZIM files (and, more generally, anchors in hyperlinks), incomplete searches in some specific ZIM files (PhET and TED), compatibility with URLs that contain an apostrophe, remove debug logs in ServiceWorker mode * In the UI, replace the spinner by a more modern one Work continues on our forge at https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix-js and https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix-js-windows. Difficult to say, but we will switch zimfarm to MWoffliner 1.7 in the next days and then all new ZIM files will be done with MWoffliner 1.7. -- Kiwix - Wikipedia Offline & more * Web: http://www.kiwix.org * Twitter: https://twitter.com/KiwixOffline * more: http://www.kiwix.org/wiki/Communication |

Hi We have published a new version of MWoffliner: the Mediawiki scraper. Version 1.7.0 is - like always - available here: https://www.npmjs.com/package/mwoffliner This new release contains mainly fixing an code improvements, here is the detailed changelog: * UPDATE: Deprecated desktop scraping (not --mobileLayout) * UPDATE: Improve the article list welcome page #449 * UPDATE: Add string translation mechanism #16 * UPDATE: Fetch hundreds of redirects at a time instead of one #325 * UPDATE: Integrated MCS alongside Parsoid #388 #347 #404 * UPDATE: Introduce automated testing #146 * UPDATE: Support remote articleList and favicon #457 * UPDATE: Added --useCache option #263 This is the second milestone of a few we have planned with the support of the WMF. Next one on the list is 1.8 and is planned for begin of March. With 1.8 will get rid of zimwriterfs and write directly ZIM files without temporary files on the hard disk. This will allow substantial speed-ups and need less mass storage during the scraping process. Like always, PR and bug reports are welcome at: https://github.com/openzim/mwoffliner Regards Emmanuel -- Kiwix - Wikipedia Offline & more * Web: http://www.kiwix.org * Twitter: https://twitter.com/KiwixOffline * more: http://www.kiwix.org/wiki/Communication |
