Thank you very much. I managed to install kile without much difficulty once I installed the missing g++ along with missing kde components. Now I am struggling to install kdvi which was supposed to be in the kubuntu package but nowhere to be seen.

Apparently configure doesn't think so. Did you install the gcc or the
gcc-4.0 package? It could be that there is no g++ in /usr/bin, but there
is a g++-4.0. In that case you will have to make a symlink in /usr/bin,
but it is better to install the gcc default package.
