I'm trying to tag an album in Kid3 and all seems well. I can see the meta data just fine, but when I upload it to Google Music (GM) but it does not find artist or album. It does, however, see the image so I know that the data is there.

Does anyone know if there is some 'trick' that I need to do to get GM to correctly see the artist and album tags? I'm pretty sure this is a GM issue.

I did a copy of Tag1 -> Tag3 and suddenly it started recognize the metadata. I don't understand why it doesn't read anything in Tag1 or Tag2 but works with Tag3.

I'm still learning kid3. Is there an easy way to autopopulate Tag3? The only way I've seen is doing a manual copy for Tag1 -> Tag3

It is easy to populate all Tag 3: Select all the files, then expand the "Tag 3" section using the [+]-button and select Tag 1 in the From v button.

However I doubt if using Tag 3 is really a neat solution. It depends on the kind of audio files you are using. If they are WAV files, Tag 3 is RIFF and commonly used and a good solution. But if they are MP3, Tag 3 is APE and mainly used for normalization information - I thought that supporting APE tags in MP3 would be used most of the times to remove such tags if they exist.

Apparently, Tag 1 isn't recognized either, which makes your case different from the one in the post I mentioned. Maybe you can further experiment with some example files having only Tag 1, or only Tag 2 with a basic set of frames (without picture).
