On Windows (7 x64) if you use Kid4 and the SUBST command you risk losing data.

    CMD shell : "subst X: D:\work\a\too\long\path\to\Album"

    Then:

    • Drag n drop X:\ folder tree into Kid3 (230 mp3s) >> Select all >> r-click >> Album Art >> Embed: only some of the files are updated, perhaps 40%.
    • Add a single X: folder, 13 files >> Select all >> ...Embed Art >> Save --> 2 files lose all their tags!
    • Add a single X: folder, 10 files >> Select all >> ...Embed Art >> Save --> 8 files lose all their tags!

Repeat above using D:...\Album instead: it's all good.

I think Windows version has file system timing and cache issues. When adding D:...\Album art, 231 files in 30 folders, many of the folders in the middle are skipped. However if I take the time to expand each of the folders in the table of contents pane at left, and briefly click one file from each folder, and then run Embed Art script, all files are updated. ((Safely though, something might be missed, but no data is lost, (that I've noticed).)

Might be related to file size too. These are podcasts up to 2 hours long, so each file is 50 to 150mb. (16GB for all 231).
