I have the same problem. I used procmon.exe from the Sysinternals suite to trace the problem and see that d3d9.dll was not found (although DirectX 9 seems to be installed). Copying this dll into the kid3 directory did not help. Google for "windows xp the qmediaplayer object does not have a valid service" and you will get a Qt bugreport.

Please understand that I am not connecting a network when using Windows XP for security reasons, so I will not try to look for some DirectShow updates and plugins on the internet from Windows XP.
I can't play mp3 from kid3 (Windows XP). Do i need some additional component for it?
