No

Some days ago I updated some applications to latest versions including update of .NET Framework to v. 4.0. Since then I have had serious problems with Keepass and personal finance software Quicken 2010. It is almost impossible to get both applications to run simultaneously, but I need Keepass for the password to the Quicken files. It looks as though .NET framework is the key to the problem. I have tried everything I can think of to fix it.

I have completely removed .NET Framework and reinstalled it several times, including using the Microsoft clean up tool. I have also cleaned up Registry and removed several stray references to .NET v4.0 which remained after it was removed. I am now running .NET 3.5 (which includes all earlier versions). I have also completely removed and reinstalled Keepass and Quicken 2010 several times.

I can open Keepass if Quicken is not running. I can open Quicken if Keepass is not running. Every time I try to open one of them when the other is already running either Quicken closes without warning or Keepass produces this error and then closes.

Here are logs of four of the exception texts,

FOURTH EXAMPLE which is the most recent:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

** JIT Debugging **
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true"/>
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

    Until you fix it you could save the Quicken password in KeePass V1.

    cheers, Paul

    The exceptions are thrown by GDI+ while .NET is drawing a combobox. As there is no KeePass code involved in this (as it can be seen from the stack traces), unfortunately I don't see how I could prevent/workaround this.

    Searching the web, other applications apparently have similar problems and for some people installing the following updates has worked:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971030/
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923028/

    If you're using Windows XP, consider testing the issue on a newer operating system.

    Best regards,
    Dominik

      Thanks for the advice. I have tried those microsoft fixes, and others, with no improvement. Today as Keepass and Quicken 2010 Australia once again crashed I found a slightly different error message which blames an operation exception which might provide some better insight. I am still running .NET 3.5 SP1 and Win XP:

    Update to my last reply. Since then, Word 2003 crashed and after reporting this to MS I got an automatic reply leading me to a MS knowledge base webpage that said the cause was probably excessive graphics demand that might be connected to DirectX settings. The suggested workaround for Win XP is:

    "move the Hardware acceleration slider control to the second position from your left, and then click OK. Note The following message is the description for this slider control position:
    Disable all DirectDraw and Direct 3D accelerations, as well as all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations. Use this setting to correct severe problems with DirectX accelerated applications."

    So I did; and for the first time in weeks I have Keepass and Quicken running simultaneously, apparently with no problem. As I mentioned above, all this grief began when I updated .NET 3.5 to 4.0. What I overlooked was that when I downloaded .NET 4.0 a page appeared that recommended, among other things, adding the latest DirectX and I casually accepted that too. It now looks as though that was my critical mistake, rather than updating .NET.

    just to note, that this will impair (as it no longer run) some of the applications that require DirectX. Like games :)
