I've come across an annoying problem with kdiff3 on Red Hat Linux; A number of the menu items in the GUI which turn options on or off do not indicate the current state of the option correctly. This seems to apply to all on/off menu entries which have icons on the left hand side of the menu. Those without icons show a tick when the option is turned on or nothing when it is turned off. Those without icons do not change appearance. On kdiff3 on Windows the behaviour is subtly different in that options which are enabled are highlighted with a paler background under the icon or the tick, but this isn't happening under Linux and it is all too easy to run a diff, not realise that the 'Show files only in A' or 'Show files only in B' options are turned on because there's nothing to indicate it in the menu and miss something of vital importance! I've tried it on a couple of PC's, one with KDE and one with Gnome (both running the same Red Hat) and got the same result - Anyone happen to have any idea whether this a bug/limitation of the software, or our particular Linux setup? Could you please retry after removing the ".kdiff3rc"-file from your user specifics subdir in "Documents and Settings" or whereever your home-dir on Win2000 is? Is it better then? I tried kdiff3 on a PC Windows 2000 computer and the "restore down" button does not work. It is either maximized of minimized. I tried uninstall and run directly from the .exe with the same result. On some other PC Windows 2000 computers, it works fine. Virg B |

I understand. I invested much time in the option to allow user defined opti= ons=20 that can be ignored, but the defaults are not available when starting the=20 first time. I shall fix that. Hi David, This would only make sense to me, if you mean that the files have binary differences, but equal text. Is that so? Otherwise why would you want a default behaviour for different files? Hi David, It would interest me a lot to know if the Qt4-version also shows this erratic behaviour, especially for multiple instances. Someone else also told me about that effect, even though enough ram was still available. Joachim Am Sonntag 11 November 2007 19:43:55 schrieb David M. But since KDiff3 supports several encodings (e.g UTF-8, Unicode etc.) - which was very often asked for - this is not possible any more. The reason is, that the codecs (within Qt) throw out the "unnecessary" line ending characters. I already investigated methods to reinsert them again after converting to unicode, but this is not trivial indeed. Sorry about that. Joachim > 2007/11/15, David M. It's no big problem, since you probably don't need the docs in all languages. Just cd to the src-directory and run "make" and "make install" (as root) from there. To install the docs for your language enter the respective language dir (e.g. doc/en) and do a "make" and "make install". afaict when kdiff3 encounters identical text files with different EOL characters this message is displayed: Files A and B have equal text, but are not binary equal after displaying this message kdiff3 goes on to show lines with different EOL characters as "identical". it would be great if kdiff3 was able to (optionally) display and diff EOL characters. would this be a significant modification to kdiff3? |

running kdiff3 0.9.92 on windows 2000 sp4, when available ram is low kdiff3 sometimes behaves so erratically that i need to kill the process. interestingly, i think there might be some correlation to running multiple instances of kdiff3. sorry i don't have time (in this moment) to do more testing to isolate and describe in more detail exactly what's happening. maybe this brief report will be helpful in some way to someone else who's seen the same behavior. |

Thanks. Actually, I wanted you to modify the make install to add the NoDisplay, so the .spec file didn't need to. Then, the standard 'make install' will have it already. I don't need you to modify the .spec file, I already did that. |

Hi Neal, I modified the kdiff3.spec file, but I don't understand .spec-files good enough to be sure. I added your lines below the "%files"-section. I've attached the complete file. Could you please verify it? If necessary please send the corrected file back. Best regards, Joachim Am Mittwoch 07 November 2007 19:06:55 schrieb Neal Becker: > Hello. Hello. I maintain the kdiff3 package for fedora. Hi, Your SLES9 seems to use KDE3.2 or older. Original line 1650: QStringList readListEntry (const QString& s, const QStringList& def, char separator ) { return m_pConfig->readListEntry(s.latin1(),def,separator); } error: no matching function for call to `KConfig:: readListEntry(const char*, const QStringList&, char&) Candidates are: int KConfigBase::readListEntry(const QString&, QStrList&, char) const int KConfigBase::readListEntry(const char*, QStrList&, char) const QStringList KConfigBase::readListEntry(const QString&, char) const QStringList KConfigBase::readListEntry(const char*, char) const My KDE-docs allow the following since KDE3.3: QStringList readListEntry (const char *pKey, const QStringList &aDefault, char sep= ',') const Since the paramter aDefault requires a QStringList (instead of QStrList) this doesn't work. But since it is a default parameter, you can replace the function in line 1650 with: QStringList readListEntry (const QString& s, const QStringList& def, char separator ) { // This is essentially the KDE-implementation. if ( !m_pConfig->hasKey( s.latin1() ) ) return def; else return m_pConfig-> readListEntry( s.latin1(), separator ); } Or if the above doesn't work: { QStringList sl = m_pConfig->readListEntry(s.latin1(),separator); if (sl.isEmpty()) return def; return sl; } Cheers, Joachim Am Freitag 19 Oktober 2007 16:09:59 schrieb Bob Bell: > I am trying to build kdiff3 on a SLES9 box, and I'm running into > a compilation error. Hello Joachim, I found my real problem about options which are not ignored (KDiff3: 0.9.92 - KDE: 3.5.7-1.fc6 Fedora - Qt: 3.3.8). In fact, options which are ignored seems to be stored in ~/.kdiff3rc. But, for a virgin account, this file doesn't exist. So, the first time kdiff3 is used, it doesn't ignore -u. Kdiff3 must be launched once to create this file. But, I must admit it's a very minor problem... -- Frédéric COIFFIER _______________________________________ NEXTLANE 16 Allée de la verte vallée 14000 CAEN FRANCE Tel: +33 (0)2 31 46 73 88 Fax: +33 (0)2 31 53 76 14 www.nextlane.fr |

Hi David, The strictly console based ones I know are GNU diff with the sdiff variant, wdiff and the ones you already seem to know: vimdiff, emacs via ediff. Graphical ala mc are vimdiff and "emacs -nw". (Emacs even supports merge with base file.) Joachim Am Dienstag, 2. Oktober 2007 23:53 schrieb David M. =20 hi, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_comparison_tools is a = rather complete survey on the subject i agree with Joachim :=20 If you want to compare only two files, then you have much choice. hi Joachim, i figured you'd be a good person to ask this question of: what is the "best" (your opinion) text-based diff tool? the diff tool can be console-based. it could also be vim or emacs based, etc. peace, david |
