Hi, I'm Fernando Pina, from Spain. I'm wishing to help (or initiate) a translation to spanish of this book. I've grabbed the docbook source, and I have several questions: Must I just start translating the sources? Do I have to do any kind of transformation to the sources? May I insert additional markup, as I see fit? Which Docbook documentation should I read before starting? (I already have a copy of those found in http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook). Do you use any special tool for editing XML or just an ASCII editor? I've tried some XML ones (Merlot, xmleditor, Xeena), but they don't seem to work very well with DocBook sources (they produce a big number of errors, and/or don't edit anything). I'm a Linux user, (as you could guess) and I would like to continue that way. Do you have any (standard) way to store the different translations?. May I submit each section as it is finished? How? Where? Hope to hear from you ASAP Fernando |

Translators, I just wanted to remind you about this mailing list and about the translators page at http://www.andamooka.org/kde20devel/translate.shtml This list should be used for coordinating translations efforts. I'd also like to see reports of results so that we can get the word and the work out there! If you haven't already met Gioele, allow me to introduce you. The KDE book can now be found in the kde20devel CVS repository on SourceForge. Go to http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=14552 for information on accessing it. The CVS contains: code - The source code for examples in the book docbook - DocBook support files (styles sheets and more). docbook4 - DocBook XML support files (XML 4.1.2 DTD) graphics - The figures from the book. en - The English language DocBook source. If you check out these modules and have jade installed on your system, you should be able to do: cd en make and get an HTML version of the book made for you. To translate into another language, do cp -r en XX where XX is the two-letter code for the language you want to translate to. Then start translating files. hello all, It seems that we can only distribute the translation electronically (at least not in a printed form) as David said. To my mind, this is not an issue since the translation is aimed at providing a comfortable way of reading the book to french readers. Then i think that, once the book completely translated, the owner of the copyright (simon & shuster macmillan i guess) could see that the translation is great and then print the translated version of the book. Briefly, since the terms of the open publication license seem pretty clear, let's make a good translation and make sms think a printed version could be a good idea. Darktigrou. |

People have been asking about the license for _KDE_2.0_Development_. This book is licensed under the Open Publication License v1.0 with Option B, which can be found at http://www.opencontent.org/openpub First of all, this is not the Open *Content* License, which is called the OPL. The Open Publication License has no short name. Perhaps we could use "OPubL" for short to avoid confusion. Now for the important stuff: MacMillan owns the copyright on KDE 2.0 Development. Option B of the OPubL says the following: "Distribution of the work or derivative of the work in any standard (paper) book form is prohibited unless prior permission is obtained from the copyright holder." The way I understand the situation, We can't print translated versions of the book. We can electronically distribute copies of translations and, of course, a person can print a copy for her/himself. The translator owns the copyright to whatever (s)he produces, so no one else can print it either -- without the translator's permission. In other words, with Option B, modifications, generally, can be printed, but not along with the original work. When writing a translation one can not disentangle the modification from the original work. Welcome to the KDE 2.0 Development Translators mailing list! This list was created to discuss all issues related to translating the book _KDE_2.0_Development_ which can be found at http://kde20development.andamooka.org The book can be found, in DocBook XML format, at http://download.sourceforge.net/kde20devel/kde20develdocbook.tgz You can download this version of the book and translate the text that lies between the DocBook XML tags, but not modify, move, or change the DocBook tags themselves. That's the basic plan, but we can discuss it in more detail. There is also the issue of the book's license, the Open Publication License v1.0 with Option B. We'll need to discuss that as well. Hello again, I plan to begin the translation of one chapter. But i didn't receive any feedbak from the mailing list : i don't know if someone is translating something for the french readers Could you tell me something about it and the activity of the mailing list. Could you give me some piece of advice about the tools and method i shoud use to translate ? I plan to translate word by word the source code (xml) of the book by replacing just the english content with french content, not the xml tags. Then i would use docbook and jade as described in the makefile to view the results, since i have docbook and jade. installed Is it a good choice ? As for the mailing list too, i noticed that it is not hosted on the same server anymore (maybe i missed something). Thanks in advance. Darktigrou. |

Hello, I am a french user of kde2 (and others GPLed things), and pleased to see that andamooka is doing a good work to improve the broadcast of KDE related knowledge. Since I would like to begin my work for the french translation of the book, I need some information about the tools i should use (docbook, ascii, html, latex, etc...). Then, I need to know weither the translation (french translation in my case) will be coordinated by someone or not : I could choose to follow my preferences or not. If you need a coordinator for each language, and if you have not found a french coordinator, i will be glad to be the french coordinator. Briefly, I need more information :) (I realize now that I have wasted some bandwidth :)). Keep up the good work :) ! Darktigrou. |
