I already had the KCheckGMail https option set. I now activated Don't always use https in GMail and yes, KCheckGMail can now log in and check mails again.
However, does this mean the connection between KCheckGMail and GMail is not https? I really don't like that. I want to keep the GMail option to always use https for security reasons.
Is there no different way of fixing this?

No, the connection between Gmail and KCheckGMail is https.
The "Don't always use https" means that's the client (in this case KCheckGMail) chooses the type of connection. If you check the https button on KCheckGMail, the connection will be https.
Next KCheckGMail release will include a patch for this. KCheckGMail will just follow the Gmail settings.

I am experiencing the same. KCheckGMail is non-functional with this error.
Please try this:
On KCheckGMail>Configure KCheckGMail>Network check the "Use https connections for checking mail" checkbox
On GMail>Settigs>Browser connection set the "Don't always use https" radio button.
It make KCheckGMail work again or not ?
