It is possible to modify L.fst to introduce additional phones other than
"sil". The loop going back to the new word is under your control. However
its not clear if that will give any true advantage. "sp" was introduced in
HTK to handle databases such as switchboard and there may be some advantage
to doing this if you have optional noise phones that you want to keep
separate from sil.
