Kage | A simple Free and Open Source 2D Animation Software

Kage is a simple vector-based 2D Animation Software for Windows, Mac, and GNU/Linux.

It allows you to export animation in Video (via FFmpeg) files (like MP4, MKV, OGV, AVI, MOV), HTML5, and KonsolScript.

Version

Latest Kage is v0.8.24x, which is currently in BETA stage. You can use 0.8.24x series for your animation project and post any problems you find in the forums and expect a 100% support that it gets done.

Tutorials

With Kage v0.6 marking the exit from ALPHA stage, expect tutorials to come soon. That said, head over to Tutorials.

Relation to other Open Source Projects

  1. Kage and Clash -- Clash was creek23's early attempt on creating animation software by implementing some missing basic functionalities on top of Pencil2D. But the code related to vector-handling was unbearable (no offense to Pencil2D) so creek23 had to start one from scratch, thus Kage.
  2. Kage and Pencil2D -- Through Clash, creek23 became an indirect contributor of Pencil2D with official contributors merging creek23's Clash changes to Pencil's main branch. Creek23 did the exporting of video, shortcut keys, and some other tool icons. Creek23 is not officially credited on the tools "Help->About" but the name "Mj Mendoza IV" and/or "creek23" is right there in Pencil2D's ChangeLog and some of the files he modified from Clash.
  3. Kage and Inkscape -- Inkscape is what creek23 usually use to create game art (ex Smack!) -- Kage vector-editing is currently being patterned to how Inkscape handles vector-editing. That's all the relation, creek23 isn't a developer /contributor of Inkscape.
  4. Kage and KonsolScript -- Kage was born as a tool to create games with KonsolScript. For a foreseeable future, Kage will focus on being an animation tool -- will add scripting functionality later down the line -- like way way way down the line.

Roadmap

Got a whole article for Kage's Roadmap. Read on and see if you can help with the pending backlog.
