As you said, it occurs in other curses programs. From what I've seen, Gnome-terminals and KDE-terminals never do curses correctly. I used to try Xterm when the other types of terminals didn't work, now it's the only X terminal I use cause it seems to always work (:

When playing gnobots on one of them, everything gets messed up. This can be also seen in mutt, for example.
xterm and rxvt are OK.
