Thanks for your reply. I take your point but I migrated to linux from windoze
to obtain a more stable and reliable platform and have run suse 9.0 with kde
more or less from it's release with remarkably few problems.
Does anybody know if kaffeine 0.7.1.1 is likely to run on a suse 9.0
installation and cure the problems I have outlined? If the libs it uses
differ from version 0.43 I would have thought that was unlikely. Maybe more
recent versions will run on suse 9.0 using the same libs?

I wouldn't know, I use Debian. If you need an easy to install/maintain, up to
date linux distro, I'd recommend you try out ubuntu or any of its siblings. I
am not sure SUSE is really the best distro, if you are going for a desktop
system with good multimedia capabilities.
