I tried Jython compiled on 7, run on 9, using the Windows 64-bit JDK. The most obvious problem is with Netty class-loading. The effect is very close to this: https://github.com/netty/netty/issues/6246, so it seems like a recurring one for them, maybe related to security management and the class path. I haven't delved further. "import socket" is the easiest way to trigger it, and it occurs as a result of "from io.netty.buffer import PooledByteBufAllocator" in _socket.py. When I build on Java 9, I get non-fatal error messages from ANTLR that I think are the same as on Java 8. And then a lot of deprecation warnings, including Class.getInstance(), and wrapper type constructors e.g. Integer(int). Hard to say if there are runtime problems as the Netty one stops us running the regression test.
