Turned out my problems are bigger than the missing attribute: they don't
involve jython, and are attributable to me and my ignorance of my Java IDE.
Things run fine in non-debug mode, so something about the debug environment
was causing SSL jars not to be found by jython. Debug classpaths contained
I learn't that python caches imported modules as .pyc/.pyo files; the jython
analog must be .class files. If so that explains the
automatically-generated socket$py.class. Still, I wonder why jython didn't
generate them as socket.class and socket$_PyInner.class. I suppose the
jython cache-generating algorithm is different from that used by jythonc?
