perhaps not relevant, but I've been burned in the past when I set a windows
environment variable and forgot that my shell window loads them when it
starts and doesn't see subsequent changes. restarting shell fixed it.

It happens that I don't have an XP machine. We did the trials yesterday
with a coworker in some other office and he says today the test is
working. I am absolutely puzzled because I tried to be very careful
yesterday before I sent the mail, but everything suggests I made some
error somwehere. I'll investigate this next time I go there.
The origin of this is that I have an application launcher that
constructs a classpath dynamically before it calls the main function,
and it does not work under Windows XP (the only Windows tested).
Everything is portable, file separators, glob.glob, etc., and it works
fine under Mac OS X, where I develop, so I'll need to debug this.
