Hi all, Does anyone have a sample Eclipse plugin that embeds Jython ? (jython.jar standalone as well as jython scripts). Or at least pointers or prior experience (good/bad) with this scheme ? Who knows ;). I am having problems with this ... and I would like to avoid spending 1000's of hours into Eclipse Plugin docs ... Cheers, SB |

Yes, Groovy Monkey is a plugin that supports scripting Eclipse with several languages (via BSF) including Python/Jython. http://groovy.codehaus.org/Groovy+Monkey http://sourceforge.net/projects/groovy-monkey/ Perhaps you don't need to write your plugin at all... Dear Sébastien, I´m using the IBM Rational Software Architect Version 7, an Eclipse based product, which implements a basic Jython plug-in for syntax highlighting. Add the jython.jar to your projects CLASSPATH and you should be ready to run it. You also can define a more precise runtime environment using "RUN EXTERNAL TOOLS", defining the run location and the environment variables (similar to the Windows shortcut definitions). The console prompt and messages are shown in the lower console section of the Eclipse tool. I frequently use to mix Java 6, Groovy (ProjectZero) and Jython in the same Eclipse project, so this is handy to have it all in one environment. Just a last remark. As I am an old school, non visual programmer, so I use to call the Jedit editor (www.jedit.org - GPL licence) for more complex editor tasks like block selections. or the spit screen function. Once you have the project source location, you can run both tools in parallel. Do you mean a plug-in for working with Jython code in Eclipse, or do you mean the Jython runtime packaged as an Eclipse plug-in so you can do plug-in development using Jython? For the former I use Pydev, and for the latter I use a plugin that I put together. I can't give you the code, but I will try to answer any questions you have if you are encountering difficulties. -David |

I received many answers (some of which were not cc'd to the list), thanks everybody ! Jeff Emanuel send me some example code of his own 'Jython console' plugin whose size is manageable, so I am certainly going to start with this and I will come back to this mailing-list if I have issues. The amount of answers received in a short amount of time makes me believe that this topic would make an excellent 'Jython Monthly' article. Jeff, David, folks, is there anyone with enough skills and time to get into this ? Cheers, SB > -David > > |

I also have a Jython Console plug-in for Eclipse. I think the PyDev project has recently created their own version as well loosly based on the DLTK console. It may make sense to start a separate open-source project around this so we don't all invent our own flavor. We'd probably end up with a much more functional end result as well. I've been mulling this over for awhile but just never had the gumption to go ask my boss about open-sourcing our implementation. Is anyone else interested in this? If you feel that the amount of extra work you may need to polish/document the sources and make it available on sourceforge (or google code, etc.) is low, having such an open source project would be great !
