Dave Kuhlman <dkuhlman <at> rexx.com> writes: > > I have some questions about the use of jar files with jython. Off list, Marvin Greenberg explained this to me. Quoting from Marvin: The jython.jar does not contain the python library modules. You can do a jar -tvf or similar. You won't see __future__.py (or datetime.py or UserDict.py or any of the other modules that you will see in the jython Lib/ directory. When you run the jython script, it adds JYTHON_HOME/Lib to your path which is why you can find __future__.py. You should be able to see the same thing in your original test by adding JYTHON_HOME/Lib to you sys.pathbefore doing the import. If you want to package everything into a jar, you'll have to put the various python library modules you use into the jar too. The jython.jar only includes the builtin modules like sys. Marvin is suggesting that we selectively add items from JYTHON_HOME/Lib as we learn that they are needed. In what follows, I'm just going to add everything under Lib/. Our goal is to be able to create a file or files that can be deployed and used to run a Jython application on a machine on which Jython is *not* installed (but java installed, of course). Suppose we want to run our applicaton by executing: $ java -jar myapp.jar testfuture.py To build our jar, we first make a copy of jython.jar, then add the Lib/ directory to it: $ cd $JYTHON_HOME $ cp jython.jar jythonlib.jar $ zip -u -r jythonlib.jar Lib Then we copy this expanded jar file, and add modules that are specific to our application. I'm also going to add a path to an additional jar file to the manifest: $ cd ../Test $ cp $JYTHON_HOME/jythonlib.jar myapp.jar $ zip myapp.jar Lib/showobjs.py # Add path to additional jar file. $ jar ufm myapp.jar othermanifest.mf Where, othermanifest.mf contains the following: Class-Path: ./otherjar.jar Now I have a self-contained jar file that I can run without anything from my Jython installation. All that is needed is myapp.jar and otherjar.jar To run the application, we do: $ java -jar myapp.jar testfuture.py My testfuture.py follows. Note that it imports showobjs.py which came from my Lib directory and also imports __future__ which came from JYTHON_HOME/Lib. Also, it imports from another jar (otherjar.jar), which I added to the manifest in myapp.jar with the Class-Path jar property. Ivan Horvath gave us that piece of the puzzle on the jython-user list (in thread "jythonstandalone with 3rd party jars" on 9/26/07. The othermanifest.mf that I used to add the additional jar file contains: Class-Path: ./otherjar.jar Here is a listing of the contents of otherjar.jar: $ unzip -l otherjar.jar Archive: otherjar.jar Length Date Time Name -------- ---- ---- ---- 0 09-26-07 09:28 META-INF/ 71 09-26-07 09:28 META-INF/MANIFEST.MF 49 09-26-07 09:27 testotherjar.py -------- ------- 120 3 files Here is testfuture.py, which I use to start up my test app: # testfuture.py from __future__ import generators import sys import testotherjar import sys print 'sys.version:', sys.version print 'sys.path:', sys.path import showobjs def test(): a = ['aaa', 'bbb', 'ccc', ] showobjs.showlist(a) b = showobjs.simplegen() for item in b: print 'gen:', item print 'Testing other jar.' testotherjar.fromotherjar('davy') if __name__ == '__main__': test() Dave |

It is a good suggestion to add names in Change Log=20 As far as i know most of the Open Source Projects follow the same = tradition . ...eager to know what other ppl are thinking on this. -: Keshav upadhyaya=20 >>> "Mehendran T" <TMehendran@...> 09/25/07 12:41 PM >>>=20 Hi, I have looked at the change log of latest release(2.2.1rc1). It is a = good=20 feeling to see our bug fix in the list. But It would be so nice if you = add=20 names too in the change log as in the following=20 Jython NEWS Jython 2.2.1 rc1 Bugs fixed - [ 1773865 ] Patch for [1768990] pickle fails on subclasses (Mehendran= T) And one more suggestion is that, Active contributor names can be=20 added in the CONTRIBUTOR LIST.=20 Thanks and Regards, Mehendran T ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges.
