We have had 9 of our committers contribute to 2.5.2; this also includes a number of patches submitted by the community. You can see some of the progress by tracking the source; I like fisheye, and NEWS is useful:
http://fisheye3.atlassian.com/browse/jython/trunk/jython/NEWS?r=HEAD

We plan for 2.5.2 to be the last 2.5 release, then move to 2.6 development. At this time, there's no plan to do a 2.7. However, it's possible that certain 2.7 features might be introduced to our 2.6, just as we did with 2.5 in supporting class decorators and mutable ASTs.

After 2.6, we will move to 3.x.

May definitely saw a dropoff in commits. This is a combination of a couple things: we all work on Jython in our spare time, and we are actually pretty close to a 2.5.2 beta. In getting to that last bit for beta, there are certain tasks that need to be done like triaging outstanding bugs (no one's favorite), and others, somewhat difficult ones we are hoping to get in. For instance, I've been recently looking at our regex performance to understand why is it so bad on certain patterns (specifically the ones used by HTMLParser and therefore indirectly by BeautifulSoup).

Yes indeed, the 2.5.2 release has been in the same state for quite some time now.  However, I know that it hasn't been forgotten about and I do see new commits being made every once in a while.  I'm sure that the release will come soon, but time is just a factor right now.  I think schedules are busy, and a release always takes a good amount of effort because we will go through a couple of release candidates, etc. before a final release is decided upon.

Once schedules clear up a bit I think things will move forward.

All the best.

The best way to see who is actively committing code is to take a look at the project feed.  It is available on the sourceforge site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/jython/ .

The next release will be 2.5.2, and it is ready for beta very soon now.  AFAK, just about all features for the release have been developed but the release process needs to be started.  There may be a couple of bugs holding up the process, not quite sure on the specifics.
As was the case a couple months ago already, IIRC. What progress has been made since then?

Jython's release numbers match those of CPython. If the next Jython
targets 2.7, then its version number will be 2.7 as well.
As for the list of core developers, I'm a little hazy on that too (I
don't know who's actively working on it atm).
The svn repository and the bug tracker are probably the best sources for
this information.
