Therefore we have to have a way of (a) assigning coordinates to vertices and (b) maintaining one set of coordinates for the layout and another for the actual display ("view", in our lexicon). That is to say: this is all already available in JUNG. If you know your coordinates, you can set them explicitly using a SettableVertexLocationDecorator and then pass the result to a StaticLayout as its location input. You don't need to define new classes for this; it's just a special case of capabilities that we already provide.
