I was able to install the original jtdx into the latest version of linux mint without any problems. But when I downloaded and tried to install the jtdx_improved version I get a dependency error message saying jtdx_improved requires hamlib >=4.5. I've downloaded and installed hamlib 4.5.5 and rebooted but I still get the same error message. I'm somewhat new to linux so what am I not doing, or doing wrong?

I have the same problem. To newly installed clean ubuntu i installed the git version of hamlib as the error message stated, but it didn't help. I also tried to install jtdx by force with dpkg -f. That installed the program and it worked, but then apt started to give error messages when i tried to install other applications. Apt suggested repairing of broken packages, and it did it by installing basic versions of wsjtx and jtdx (not "improved" versions).
I don't know anything about linux , but it feels like those pakcages are broken. Because i can't find older versionsn of jtdx improved and wsjtx improved, i sadly have to use basic versions now.

The problem still persists. Do i really have to forget jtdx_improved totally because of this hamlib problem?

I ran into this issue as well, and found the necessary deb package here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/jtdx/files/jtdx_2.2.159/Linux/Hamlib/

This is included in the original jtdx distribution but not here for some reason.

You can install it with dpkg and then jtdx-improved will install cleanly.
